The people of Ellembelle and Nkroful, the birthplace of Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, are once again at the heart of a cultural and intellectual renaissance as NkrumahFest 2025 officially commenced on September 15. The festival, which runs until September 21, 2025, is being organized by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, under the theme: “Celebrating Nkrumah’s Enduring Impact.”
Preserving a Vision, Inspiring a Generation
NkrumahFest was established to preserve and promote the legacy, ideology, and philosophy of Ghana’s founding leader. More than a commemorative event, the festival highlights Nkrumah’s historic role in Ghana’s independence struggle and his wider influence on Africa’s liberation movements, while also engaging younger generations in critical discussions about unity, sovereignty, and self-determination.
A Week of Activities
The 2025 edition of the festival features a diverse lineup of events designed to reflect Nkrumah’s ideals:
- Community Clean-up Exercise – Residents of Nkroful joined in a massive environmental campaign to beautify the hometown of the late President, symbolizing service to community and nation.
- Osagyefo Soccer Cup – A football tournament aimed at uniting communities while promoting youth engagement through sports.
- Student Symposium – Senior high school students participated in a symposium that encouraged intellectual discourse on Nkrumah’s philosophy and its relevance to Ghana’s future.
- Street Carnival & Mausoleum Tour – A vibrant carnival bringing together culture, music, and heritage, culminating in a symbolic tour of Nkrumah’s Mausoleum.
- Candlelight Procession – A solemn march and cake-cutting ceremony marking the 116th birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, honoring his enduring spirit.
- Thanksgiving Service & Musical Concert – The festival concludes with a spiritual thanksgiving service and a grand musical concert that aims to bring together artists and celebrants from across the country.
A Platform for Reflection and Renewal
For MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, NkrumahFest is not merely a celebration but a call to action. It provides a platform for youth, scholars, traditional leaders, and citizens to reflect on Ghana’s past, assess the present, and envision a future rooted in the ideals Nkrumah espoused—African unity, intellectual independence, and economic self-determination.
“Osagyefo’s vision was not just for Ghana, but for Africa and the Black race everywhere,” Buah noted at the festival’s opening. “This festival is our way of reminding ourselves that the dream of self-reliance, unity, and transformation remains within reach if we remain committed.”
Why NkrumahFest Matters
At a time when Africa continues to navigate challenges of development, governance, and continental integration, NkrumahFest stands as a cultural compass and intellectual guidepost. It re-centers Nkrumah’s vision within today’s conversations and reaffirms his place as a global symbol of liberation and Pan-Africanism.
As the festival unfolds, Ellembelle and Nkroful are not only honoring their most distinguished son but are also extending his message of hope and resilience to the rest of Ghana and Africa.
