NDC’s Bernard Baidoo Wins Akwatia By-Election

Accra, Ghana — September 2, 2025
Legal practitioner Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the highly anticipated Akwatia by-election, securing victory in a closely contested race.

  • Votes received:
    • Bernard Bediako Baidoo (NDC): 18,199 votes (~54%)
    • Solomon Kwame Asumadu (NPP): 15,235 votes
    • Owusu Patrick (Liberal Party of Ghana): 82 votes

Baidoo’s win reclaims the constituency for the NDC, which previously lost it in the 2024 general elections by a narrow margin of about 2,063 votes.

Campaign Highlights and Aftermath

  • NDC Primary: On August 4, 2025, Bernard Bediako Baidoo emerged as the NDC’s candidate in a tightly fought primary where he garnered 380 votes, beating Erasmus Ali Korney (366) and former MP Henry Yiadom Boakye (226).
  • 2014 Election Reference: In the December 2024 general election, Ernest Yaw Kumi (NPP) won the seat with approximately 19,269 votes, narrowly defeating Henry Yiadom Boakye (NDC), who received approximately 17,206.
  • Election Day Incident: The day’s proceedings were mostly peaceful, though early in the day police intervened to arrest a man accused of removing campaign posters. A scuffle involving NPP and NDC local officials occurred at a polling station but was quickly diffused.

Victory’s Broader Impact

  • Parliamentary Shift: With this win, the NDC strengthens its hold in Parliament, now holding 183 seats, while NPP is reduced to 87.
  • Political Implications: Akwatia, historically a swing constituency, now swings back to NDC control. The result is viewed as both a mandate for President Mahama’s administration and a setback for the NPP.
