🕊️ Saviour Church Crash: NDC Donates GH₵60,000 to Support Victims’ Families and Church 🙏

🕊️A heavy pall of grief enveloped the Obogu community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of 16 members of the Saviour Church of Ghana.

✝️What Happened

The tragedy occurred on Monday, July 28, 2025, at around 2:30 p.m., along the Atwedie stretch of the Kumasi–Accra Highway. The victims, returning from the church’s annual programme in the Eastern Region, were travelling in a Ford Transit minibus when it collided head-on with an oncoming fuel tanker. Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker’s tyre may have burst while overtaking, causing it to veer uncontrollably into the minibus. All 16 occupants, including youth from the church’s ministry and two children of the head pastor, perished on the spot.

Four other church members sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Juaso Government Hospital, where they are reportedly responding well to treatment.

💔A Community in Mourning

On Thursday, July 31, 2025, the community and church leadership held a mass burial in Obogu to lay the 16 victims to rest. A single large grave was dug to inter them side-by-side — a solemn testament to their faith and unity in life and death. Family members, church leaders, and local residents gathered to mourn and pay their final respects, their grief deepened by the proximity of loss and the bond of fellowship.

💝NDC Responds with Compassion

Moved by the profound loss, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) delivered a gesture of solidarity. On Saturday, August 10, led by party chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC delegation visited Obogu to console the bereaved families and the church. The party donated GH₵60,000, with GH₵50,000 allocated to affected families and GH₵10,000 to aid the church’s recovery efforts.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Nketiah urged the community to remain steadfast in faith during their darkest hour, emphasizing that the “pain is unbearable, especially for those who have lost two or three children”.

🌍A Call for Unity and Reform

The tragedy has reignited conversations about road safety, particularly on the treacherous Kumasi–Accra corridor, and underscored the need for improved infrastructure and emergency preparedness. Community members have again called on authorities to strengthen safety measures to prevent future disasters.

In a moment marked by sorrow, solidarity also shone through — through financial support, shared grief, and communal prayers, a reminder that in loss, empathy becomes healing.
