Death of Opposition MP Triggers High-Stakes By-Election in Akwatia

Akwatia, Ghana – July 8, 2025:
The sudden death of opposition MP Ernest Yaw Kumi has not only plunged Ghana’s Akwatia constituency into mourning but also triggered what many political analysts are calling the first major political test for President John Mahama’s administration since his return to power.

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator for Akwatia, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 7, barely seven months into his first term in Parliament. The circumstances of his death remain under investigation, with initial reports citing a short illness.

🗳️ A By-Election That May Shape the National Mood

The Electoral Commission is expected to soon declare a by-election in Akwatia, setting the stage for a fiercely contested seat in what has traditionally been a swing constituency. Political observers believe the outcome could serve as a referendum on President Mahama’s leadership, especially as his government begins implementing key policy promises.

“This is not just a local election—it is a litmus test for Mahama 2.0,” said political scientist Dr. Evelyn Owusu of the University of Ghana. “Voters will be sending a signal about whether they are satisfied with the government’s direction.”

Mahama returned to power in the 2024 general election, defeating the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a historic political comeback. While his government has enjoyed a honeymoon period, economic pressures and public expectations remain high.

🔄 Akwatia: More Than Just a Constituency

Akwatia is often seen as a bellwether seat, having swung between the NDC and NPP over the years. In the 2024 polls, Ernest Kumi narrowly won with 19,269 votes, edging out the NDC’s Henry Yiadom Boakye. His victory symbolized NPP resilience in Eastern Region strongholds, despite national losses.

With Kumi’s passing, the NPP will be eager to retain the seat as a symbol of survival, while the NDC will see an opportunity to expand its parliamentary majority and validate its governance agenda.

🔥 High-Stakes Campaign Expected

Both parties are already reportedly strategizing behind the scenes. Sources close to the NDC hint that President Mahama may personally campaign in Akwatia to boost momentum, while the NPP is considering fielding a strong local figure with roots in the constituency.

Key campaign issues are expected to include:

  • Economic hardship and inflation
  • Educational reform and school infrastructure
  • Youth unemployment and vocational training
  • Healthcare access and NHIS performance

“We will not let this seat go without a serious fight,” an NPP regional executive told reporters.
“The people of Akwatia deserve a government that listens,” countered a spokesperson from the NDC’s Eastern Region office.

🏛️ Parliament in Mourning

In the meantime, Parliament has suspended proceedings to mourn the loss of Kumi. His seat has been draped in red cloth, and members from both the Majority and Minority sides have paid glowing tributes to his short but impactful tenure.

📌 What’s Next?

  • The Electoral Commission is expected to formally declare the by-election within the constitutional time frame.
  • Political campaigns are expected to heat up in the coming weeks.
  • The results of the Akwatia by-election could have national implications, influencing cabinet decisions, NDC momentum, and NPP strategies ahead of the 2028 election cycle.

⚖️ A Contest With Consequences

What started as a tragic loss may now reshape Ghana’s political landscape. The battle for Akwatia has begun—not just for a parliamentary seat, but for the heart of a nation gauging the performance of its returning President.
