The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to pursuing justice in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
Briefing the press on Wednesday, April 23, Mr Dwumfour noted that although one suspect has been arrested and is currently facing trial, several questions remain unanswered.
“We are still following the Ahmed Suale case with keen interest. Although one suspect has been arrested and is currently facing trial, many issues surrounding the case are still not clear to us. So far, our efforts to get clarity on those issues from the Police have not been successful,” he stated.
He called on the Ghana Police Service to provide periodic updates on the case, citing the high public interest at both national and international levels.
“We once again call on the police to update the public on the case through periodic findings or periodic briefings, given the huge public interest in this case, both at the national and international levels,” he stressed.
Mr Dwumfour further reiterated the GJA’s intention to seek external intervention if local efforts prove unfruitful.
“Our position to seek external intervention in this case has not changed. We will only shift from our position when we are totally convinced that justice is at hand,” he said.
He added that the GJA is prepared to take the matter to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in pursuit of justice for the slain journalist.
“Our international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), are also ready to pursue justice for Ahmed Suale at other international forums,” Mr Dwumfour revealed.
Ahmed Suale, a member of Tiger Eye PI, was gunned down in January 2019. His death sparked national and international outrage, with continued calls for justice from press freedom advocates across the world.
