KNUST student’s death: Suspect remanded in Police custody

The suspect arrested in connection with the tragic death of a final year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been remanded in Police custody to reappear in court on Friday, March 14.

Daniel Tuffuor was picked up by the Police after campus CCTV footage captured him engaged in a violent confrontation with the deceased, Joana Deladem Yabani.

Reports suggested that Joana fell on the ground during the altercation and after realizing she was unresponsive, the suspect allegedly relocated her body close to the University’s Disability and Rehabilitation Centre, where she was later found.

Daniel’s plea was not taken after the fact sheet was read to him when he appeared before the Prempeh Assembly Hall District Court.

The Prosecutor requested to keep the suspect in custody for two weeks to conclude with its investigation, which the judge granted. Family and friends of the deceased who were in court to witness the proceedings are hoping for a swift justice to assuage their loss and pain.|
The suspect has been charged with causing harm and conspiracy to commit murder.

The Ghana Police Service arrested the suspect in connection with the tragic death of Yabane Deladem Aku, a 21-year-old Level 400 Biological Science student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Aku was discovered unresponsive behind the Central Laboratory on campus in the early hours of February 27, 2025.

Medical personnel from KNUST Hospital arrived at the scene, but she was pronounced dead before her body was transported to the morgue for further examination.

A police examination of the body revealed signs of violence, raising suspicions of foul play. Following a detailed crime scene investigation, authorities arrested Daniel Tuffour, who is now in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.

In response to the tragic incident, the Inspector-General of Police has met with Aku’s family to offer condolences and assure them of a thorough investigation. He also engaged the university community to discuss strengthening campus security measures to ensure student safety.
