The Accra High Court has granted bail to Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, the former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This decision comes after Afoko spent almost a decade in remand.
Presiding over the case, Justice Marie-Louise Simmons set the bail amount at GH₵500,000, requiring two sureties. One of these sureties must justify the bail with a landed property. Additionally, Afoko is mandated to report to the police investigator handling the case regularly.
Afoko’s legal team filed this latest bail application on February 17, 2025, marking his third attempt to secure bail during the prolonged trial period. Previous applications had been denied, with the court citing no unreasonable delay in the retrial process.
The case dates back to May 20, 2015, when Adams Mahama suffered a fatal acid attack outside his residence in Bolgatanga. Afoko, along with co-defendant Asabke Alangdi, was arrested and charged in connection with the murder. Alangdi was previously convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to death, while Afoko’s trial has faced multiple delays, leading to his extended remand.
As part of the bail conditions, Afoko is required to report to the chief investigator, the regional crime officer in Accra, or the Director General of the CID every two weeks until the case concludes. The trial is ongoing, with the prosecution continuing its case against Afoko.
This development marks a significant turn in a case that has spanned nearly a decade, drawing national attention due to its political implications and the prolonged detention of the accused.
