Office closures, stranded clients, and uncertainty loom as members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) stage a strike over the appointment of the new Registrar of Births and Deaths. With no clear timeline for their return, services remain suspended.
The union called on its members to prepare for a nationwide industrial action, scheduled to begin today Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The planned strike is in protest against the continued tenure of Samuel Adom Botchway at the Births and Deaths Registry as a Registrar.
According to reports from Joy News’ correspondent in the Ashanti Region, members had reported to work but were denied service to clients due to the strike action.
Anass Sabit, a Joy News’ correspondent in the Bono East Region also reported that offices were empty due to the strike action leaving members of the public stranded.
However, Matina Bugri reports that some members of the union in the Northern Region are at post and are rendering services to clients despite the ongoing strike
CLOGSAG expressed concerns over Mr Botchway’s participation in the office’s budget hearing at the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs on Monday, February 17, 2025, which they see as evidence that he remains in his role, contrary to the government’s previous commitment to replace him.
Those who refused to participate in the strike are of the view that their leadership appears to be fighting a personal battle rather than an action that represents their collective interest.
They insist that the registrar, a one-time District Chief Executive under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, is a politically-exposed person and does not qualify for a role in the civil service role, but the government disagrees with their position.
