I’m officially an NDC member – Michael Blackson celebrates over Eurobond settlement

Ghanaian-American comedian and philanthropist Michael Blackson has officially declared his membership with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the government’s recent settlement of Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) coupons totaling GH¢6.081 billion. This development has provided relief to numerous bondholders, including Blackson, whose investments were previously locked up.

In a social media post dated February 17, 2025, Blackson expressed his gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the timely intervention. He stated, “Look at God, this is a very great start for all bondholders. As of today, I’m officially a member of the NDC party. Mahama, you just put a smile on the faces of the kids at my free school.”

Blackson’s investment of $1.2 million in Eurobonds was intended to fund the Michael Blackson Academy, a free educational institution he established in Agona Nsaba, Central Region. However, under the previous administration, his funds were trapped due to the DDEP, leading to significant financial setbacks for the comedian.

In earlier statements, Blackson criticized the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for mismanaging his investment, which he had hoped would sustain his philanthropic efforts in Ghana. He lamented, “Ghana decided to use our money to pay their debt to China or whoever and leave us hanging.”

The recent fulfillment of DDEP obligations by President Mahama’s administration has not only restored Blackson’s faith in the country’s financial system but has also motivated him to align politically with the NDC. This move underscores the impact of governmental financial policies on individual investors and highlights the importance of trust and transparency in public administration.

Blackson’s declaration has sparked discussions among Ghanaians, with many expressing support for his decision, while others reflect on the broader implications of political affiliations influenced by economic experiences.
