“Pidgin News” – Minority vex over Mahama suspension of Chief Justice – Call am ‘Judicial Coup’

Ghana Parliament Minority dey vex well-well over President John Mahama ein recent move to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, and dem don call di action one kind “judicial coup”.

Di suspension happen on Tuesday, April 22, after di Presidency announce say dem don set up investigative committee to look into serious petitions wey dey accuse di Chief Justice of misconduct and bias.

President Mahama say di action dey follow di Ghana Constitution, and Council of State sef give approval before e move ahead.

But di Minority side for Parliament no dey agree. For inside strong statement, dem talk say di move no respect due process or rule of law, and e fit break Ghana judicial independence.

“Dis one na executive overreach wey fit destroy trust wey people get for di courts,” dem talk.


Timing of Di Suspension Don Cause Talk

Minority say di timing no make sense, because Supreme Court never rule on whether di suspension process correct or not.

According to dem, dis show say President Mahama no dey respect di judiciary and e just dey rush take action without waiting for court verdict.

Dem compare di matter to 1963, wey Ghana first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah sack Chief Justice Sir Arku Korsah after e rule against government. Dem say history dey repeat itself.


“Na Political Move, No Be Accountability” – Minority Talk

Minority accuse Mahama say e dey use di suspension to push one NDC political agenda and try control Ghana judiciary from Flagstaff House.

“Dis no be about justice. E be about control and revenge,” one Minority MP talk.

Dem also remind Ghanaians say for 2023, Mahama talk for Akosombo say e go rebalance di judiciary and appoint judges wey get “sympathy for NDC”. Minority say dis suspension na clear sign of that plan.


“Dis Be Tyranny, No Be Good Governance”

Inside di statement, Minority no mince words. Dem say:

“This no be governance. This na attempt to hijack judiciary. We go resist am.”

Dem add say Ghanaians no go sit down make one government turn court system to party tool.


Warning to President Mahama: “We Go Resist Any Further Interference”

Di Minority warn say if Mahama try do more things to remove, intimidate or harass di Chief Justice, or try appoint “loyal judges”, dem go use both legal fight and public protest to stop am.

“We no go allow Executive turn judiciary to handbag,” dem vow.


Dem Dey Call For Reinstatement of Chief Justice

Dem ask President Mahama make e restore Chief Justice Torkornoo immediately while dem wait Supreme Court ruling on whether di suspension process even correct.

Dem also say any plan to remove am must stop now until court talk im final say.

“Ghana judiciary integrity no be for sale or politics,” Minority end di statement.
