Bureau of Ghanaian Languages to Collaborate on Ahanta Language Renaissance Project

The Bureau of Ghanaian Languages has expressed strong interest in collaborating on the Ahanta Language Renaissance Project, following a working visit by the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West to the Bureau’s headquarters in Accra on Friday.

The Bureau, which is mandated to promote the preservation of Ghanaian languages and culture through publications, certification, technology, and partnerships, praised the initiative aimed at revitalising the Ahanta language and making its study attractive, particularly among children.

During discussions, officials revealed that a new animation project was underway to promote Ghanaian languages. They confirmed that Ahanta would be included in the list of languages to benefit from the programme.

The MP further disclosed that the Bureau currently produces podcasts in various Ghanaian languages at its studios. As part of the partnership, the Bureau has agreed to support the production of Ahanta language podcasts, which will soon feature voices from Ahanta. These podcasts are expected to be accessible on social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, enabling both residents and members of the Ahanta diaspora to learn and engage with the language.

In addition, the Bureau indicated readiness to work with the University of Education, Winneba—already a partner in establishing an Ahanta Language Studies faculty—to train teachers once the language curriculum is mainstreamed. Plans are also underway to collaborate with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to make Ahanta an examinable subject in the future.

The MP emphasized that his commitment to the project remains unwavering, noting that he has invested significant time and resources into advancing the initiative within his seven months in office. He described the project as “fundamental to the socio-economic growth and development of the Ahanta people,” and assured that technology would be leveraged to drive its success.
