Israel kills 20 Palestinians in airstrikes after agreeing to let some aid into Gaza

Israel Resumes Limited Aid Deliveries to Gaza Amid Intensified Military Offensive

On Monday, May 19, 2025, Israel conducted overnight airstrikes in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 Palestinians. These strikes occurred shortly after Israel announced it would permit a limited amount of humanitarian aid into the territory, ending a two-month blockade that had brought Gaza to the brink of famine.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Pressure

The blockade, which began in early March, had severely restricted the entry of food, fuel, and medical supplies into Gaza. This led to widespread hunger, with nearly the entire population experiencing food insecurity and approximately 20% facing starvation. International allies, including the United States, exerted pressure on Israel to alleviate the humanitarian crisis, warning that continued support for Israel’s military campaign against Hamas would be difficult if images of mass starvation emerged.

Limited Aid and Military Objectives

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the resumption of limited humanitarian aid into Gaza. The aid, primarily consisting of food items like flour, oil, legumes, and baby food, is intended to prevent a starvation crisis that could jeopardize Israel’s renewed military offensive against Hamas, dubbed “Operation Gideon’s Chariot.” The aid will be distributed via U.S.-backed hubs managed by the Israeli military to prevent access by Hamas, though aid agencies have voiced concerns about the plan’s effectiveness and ethics.

Intensified Military Operations

Despite the aid announcement, Israel has intensified its military operations in Gaza. The Israeli military launched extensive ground operations throughout the territory, targeting Hamas infrastructure and attempting to secure the release of hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks. In one such operation, an Israeli undercover unit killed Ahmed Sarhan, a commander of the Popular Resistance Committees, in a raid in Khan Younis.

Humanitarian Concerns and Ongoing Conflict

Humanitarian organizations have criticized the limited scope of the aid and the conditions under which it is being delivered. They argue that the current relief measures are insufficient to address the urgent needs of Gaza’s population. Additionally, the proposed aid distribution mechanism involving private contractors has been called dangerous and potentially unlawful.

As of now, ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar, have reached a stalemate. Hamas has warned that continued Israeli operations endanger the remaining captives.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with the humanitarian crisis deepening amid ongoing military operations. The international community continues to call for increased aid and a resolution to the conflict to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
