Mahama’s removal of Dampare was ‘cold and lacked appreciation’ – Franklin Cudjoe

The President of IMANI Africa has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over the dismissal of ex-Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, describing the manner of his removal as lacking warmth and empathy.

According to Franklin Cudjoe, the official letter which announced Dr Dampare’s dismissal failed to acknowledge his service or extend any goodwill messages for the future.

He compared the situation to the removal of former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo by ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo, noting that although Mr Domelevo’s dismissal was widely condemned, at least an explanation was given.

“What concerned some of us was how the letter was written – it was really cold, without any sense of appreciation.

“At the very least, it should have included a simple ‘we wish you well in your future endeavours,’ but that was missing,” he said on Citi TV on Saturday, March 15.

Mr Cudjoe also criticised the lack of consistency in leadership transitions, stating that if President Mahama-led administration intends to improve governance, it should handle such matters more professionally.

“If you want to reset governance, you must do it properly and show respect. At least recognize that the person has contributed in some way,” he added.

His comments comes after President Mahama relieved Dr Dampare of his duties as Inspector-General of Police and appointed his deputy, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as his replacement.

This decision was announced in a press statement issued by the presidency on Thursday, March 13.

It said the president made the appointment in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution in consultation with the Council of State.

President Mahama subsequently swore in COP Christian Tetteh on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House, with senior government officials and top security personnel in attendance.
