Israel Seeks Truce on Its Terms as Army Edges Into Gaza City

August 2025 — Gaza City

Amid escalating military operations, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have advanced into Gaza City’s northern sectors, intensifying their campaign against Hamas and preparing the ground for talks—on conditions firmly set by Israel.

Military Maneuvers & Humanitarian Toll

Overnight, Israeli tanks moved into the Ebad-Alrahman neighborhood on Gaza City’s northern periphery, demolishing houses and triggering a mass exodus of residents. While tanks later withdrew to Jabalia, airstrikes persisted across eastern areas of the city. Local church leaders, defying evacuation orders, pledged to stay and support civilians unable to leave.

As the offensive deepens, the Gaza Health Ministry reports over 62,000 Palestinian fatalities since the war began in October 2023—half of them women and children. The humanitarian crisis shows no signs of abating, with widespread displacement and a malnutrition emergency gripping the region.

Diplomacy: On Israel’s Terms

International mediators recently presented a 60-day ceasefire proposal that includes staged hostage exchanges and humanitarian aid access—terms already accepted by Hamas. Yet Israel has not formally agreed, citing key preconditions: Hamas must disarm and all hostages must be released immediately.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to resume hostage negotiations and end hostilities, but only “on terms acceptable to Israel.” Simultaneously, he approved plans to seize Gaza City and solidify control over it.

United States Pushes for Post-War Planning

The U.S. is stepping up diplomatic engagement. In Washington, President Trump is convening an emergency meeting alongside Secretary of State Rubio and Israeli officials to outline post-war strategies for Gaza. Talks will address governance transition, humanitarian relief, and prospects for a more stable Gaza framework.

International Pressure Grows

Global condemnation is mounting. The Pope strongly denounced ongoing “collective punishment” and forced displacement, appeal for ceasefire, and reinforcement of international humanitarian law.

In Europe, more than 200 former diplomats urged the European Union to take immediate action, including sanctions or arms restrictions, should Israel continue its military campaign.

Gaza’s People Nowhere to Turn

With nearly 90% of Gaza now militarized or under evacuation orders, over one million civilians are confined to a precarious southern coastal strip. Many displaced repeatedly and now crushed in overcrowded Mawasi, residents voiced despair at being forced into confined, under-resourced regions with no viable alternative.

Israel’s Strategic Calculus

While diplomacy churns, Israel continues to fortify its military advantage. The mobilization of 60,000 reservists, alongside the planned invasion of Gaza City under operations like “Gideon’s Chariots II,” underscores the military’s intent to dismantle Hamas’s stronghold.

Plans are already in motion to redraw Gaza’s map—through corridors like the Morag Corridor, enabling Israeli territorial control that segregates communities and reinforces pressure on Hamas.

Conclusion

Israel finds itself at a critical juncture—pursuing peace negotiations while extending military reach into Gaza City’s heart. Its terms demand total disarmament, immediate hostage releases, and strategic control over Gaza’s governance.

Humanitarian suffering persists, diplomacy stalls, and the world watches as Gaza teeters between war and the dim hope of a truce—one shaped, unmistakably, on Israel’s terms.
