🚨 ACP Benjamin Agordzo Reinstated, Elevated to DCOP in Police Service Reshuffle

Accra, Ghana – July 2025 – In a significant move within the Ghana Police Service, ACP (rtd.) Benjamin Kwasi Agordzo has been officially reinstated and promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP). The reinstatement ends a protracted period of legal battles and suspension that nearly upended his distinguished 35‑year career in law enforcement.

🧾 A Storied Career Interrupted

ACP Agordzo, once a senior officer within the National Elections Security Task Force, was dismissed under the administration of President Kufuor in 2007 after openly speaking out on government policies. He was later reinstated, albeit at a reduced rank, after appealing his dismissal in 2009.

His career was further disrupted when he was accused—alongside nine others—of conspiracy and abetment of high treason in the widely publicized 2021 coup plot trial. While six individuals were convicted and sentenced, Agordzo was acquitted and discharged by the High Court in January 2024. He expressed confidence in his innocence all along.

📚 From Persecution to Freedom: A Personal Memoir

Following his acquittal, Agordzo penned a deeply personal 500-page memoir titled From Persecution to Freedom: Reflections on My Journey Through the Justice System in Ghana. Through 28 chapters, he recounts facing systemic flaws, resistance, and injustice—with a call for institutional reform. The launch of the book in November 2024 drew support from legal experts and civic leaders, emphasizing its critical commentary on human rights and the criminal justice process.

✅ Reintegration and Higher Rank

Agordzo’s formal return to the police service coincided with the announcement in July 2025 of promotions for nineteen senior officers. Among them was Benjamin K. Agordzo (rtd), elevated to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP). This appointment brings him back into active service after his acquittal and formal reinstatement.

🎯 What It Signifies

  1. Vindication of Service: His return marks a restoration of reputation and legacy after years of legal and administrative limbo.
  2. Acknowledgement of Experience: At DCOP level, Agordzo joins Ghana’s top commanders, contributing strategic insight into leadership and operations.
  3. Institutional Signal: The promotion underscores a broader move to recognize officers who endured legal battles while maintaining professional integrity.

🔍 Looking Forward

As DCOP, Agordzo is expected to play a role in human resources and operational planning, drawing on his experience navigating both field operations and high-stakes institutional turbulence.

He previously accepted the position of Head of Human Resources at the National Security Council in January 2025, further underlining his expertise in personnel and security administration.
