Mahama: Officials Questioned Over $245M African Games Scandal

Accra, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that key officials involved in organizing the 2023 African Games have been questioned as part of ongoing investigations into allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption.

Speaking during a live televised address on Wednesday night — marking the first 120 days of his administration’s social contract with Ghanaians — President Mahama assured citizens that his government is committed to transparency and accountability.

“Let me be clear — no one will be shielded. Officials have already been questioned, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.

African Games Expenditure Under Scrutiny

The 2023 African Games, hosted in Accra in March 2024, were hailed as a major sporting achievement for Ghana. However, controversy soon followed after reports emerged that $245 million was spent on the event — sparking widespread concerns over procurement irregularities, inflated contracts, and alleged kickbacks.

The Games included infrastructure projects such as new stadiums, athlete accommodations, and security logistics, all of which are now part of the anti-corruption probe.

Anti-Corruption Agencies Involved

President Mahama confirmed that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) have been tasked with conducting independent reviews of contracts, payments, and expenditures linked to the Games.

“We will not politicize the process. The institutions must be allowed to work without interference,” he said.

Public Reaction and Calls for Justice

Civil society organizations and opposition leaders have welcomed the move but are calling for swift prosecution of anyone found culpable. The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) urged the government to publish preliminary audit findings and ensure asset recovery where appropriate.

Some whistleblowers within the Games’ organizing committee have already provided documents alleging non-competitive procurement and ghost contracts.

Conclusion: A Test of Leadership and Reform

As President Mahama’s administration continues to restore public confidence in governance after the 2024 elections, the African Games scandal represents a critical test of his promise to tackle corruption head-on.

Ghanaians now await further developments — and potentially high-profile prosecutions — in what could become one of the country’s biggest post-event financial scandals.
