Officials invited and questioned on 2023 African Games ‘scandal’ – President Mahama

Mahama: African Games Scandal Under Investigation as Officials Face Interrogation

President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that several government officials have already been questioned over their roles in the $245 million scandal tied to the 2024 African Games hosted in Accra. The disclosure came during his official 120-day social contract briefing on national television, marking his first major performance update since the 2024 elections.

The Ghana 2024 African Games were initially touted as a symbol of African unity and a boost to national pride. However, they have since been tainted by allegations of corruption, prompting widespread calls for accountability and transparency.

“We are investigating the 2024 African Games expenditure, and key officials involved have already been interrogated,” Mahama said.

2024 African Games Expenditure Raises Eyebrows

Public scrutiny intensified after reports emerged that $245 million was spent on the Games, with significant portions allegedly misused through inflated contracts, unverified consultancy payments, and incomplete infrastructure projects. These allegations have sparked demands for a comprehensive audit by civil society organizations and the Auditor-General of Ghana.

Mahama assured citizens that the government would not protect any wrongdoers.

EOCO, Auditor-General, and OSP on the Case

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), and the Auditor-General are reportedly working together to track spending, verify procurement procedures, and investigate any instances of financial mismanagement.

Key concerns include:

  • No-bid contract awards
  • Delayed payments to contractors
  • Lack of transparency in vendor selection
  • Dubious consultancy services
  • Possible embezzlement of public funds

President Mahama Reiterates Anti-Corruption Pledge

The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to good governance, fighting corruption, and ensuring financial accountability following the return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to power in 2024.

“My administration is determined to break the cycle of impunity. We will investigate and prosecute wrongdoing, regardless of rank,” Mahama said.

Public Trust at Stake

As investigations unfold, public pressure continues to mount. Ghanaians are calling for decisive action to recover lost funds and penalize those responsible. The scandal has already affected perceptions of Ghana’s ability to host future international sporting events.

Conclusion: Eyes on Mahama’s Leadership

The African Games scandal is shaping up to be a defining early test of Mahama’s leadership and commitment to transparency in public spending. With investigations ongoing, many are watching to see whether justice will be served in one of the biggest sports funding controversies in Ghana’s recent history.
