Intention behind National Economic Dialogue remarkable but… – Dr Kabiru Mahama

Member of Parliament for Walewale, Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has lauded the just-ended National Economic Dialogue program.

He acknowledged its positive intentions but called for a more structured approach to tackling the country’s economic issues.

The event, which was held at the Accra International Conference Centre from March 3 to 4, 2025, brought together representatives from the private sector, civil society organizations, traditional authorities, and academia under the distinguished patronage of President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr Mahama acknowledged that the intention behind the economic dialogue was commendable.

“I think that the intention around this whole economic dialogue is a good one. It is good in the sense that governance from a participatory perspective is good and a virtue,” he said on Saturday, March 8.

He highlighted that participatory democracy, which brings citizens together to discuss and reach consensus on national issues, is crucial to good governance.

However, Dr Mahama also pointed out a key concern regarding the manner in which the government has approached the dialogue.

“When you are given a mandate to rule, you come with very clear interventions. You don’t go and throw the whole economy to the good people of Ghana and say let’s discuss, and come to a solution on how we address the issues,” he emphasized.

Dr Mahama suggested that, while involving the public in discussions about economic governance is important, the government should have taken a more guided approach.

“And that is the point that I think the government could have done. It should have been a guided dialogue,” he concluded.
